Patrick Zambonin - electric bass guitar
Joerg Mikula - drums
Zuzee - turntables

latest release: "The Big Easy" (2009, Cracked Anegg)

Drechsler is back with a new line-up and a new album "The Big Easy" in order to sound out the possibilities of so called Nu Jazz. After the success of the last album “Fortune Cookie” (2006), which serves up a tremendous mixture of varying styles and such energy that it doesn’t allow the listener to stay seated while listening, Drechlser is taking the next logical step and moving forward with "The Big Easy". Irresistible rhythms are what have always stood in the center of Drechlser’s original quartet line-up and musical concept, which merges acoustic and electronic music in order to create a unique form of danceable jazz. However, for the new quintet, which now includes keyboards and an electronic bass, a whole new world of possibilities has opened up. The mix of styles such as Hip-Hop, R&B, Drum'n'Bass, Funk & Soul, Jazz, Blues, Bossa Nova and World Music has remained unchanged; yet, now catchy melodies, harmonies and atmospheric sounds have been added to the recipe. Drechlser has become even more eclectic and exciting without losing its original aim: getting the audience up and dancing!

Ulrich Drechsler, who has returned to the bass clarinet on “The Big Easy” in addition to playing the tenor saxophone, has established himself as one of the most versatile and appealing musicians in the jazz scene. For the new Drechlser line-up, he invited the young, Austrian pianist/keyboarder Benny Omerzell to take part and help give the music totally new tonal and rhythmical facets. A further new band member is the Swiss electric bassist Patrick Zambonin, who represents the new foundation of sound. Jörg Mikula, the band’s drummer, is pretty well-known in the meantime - partially through his longstanding collaboration with Ulrich Drechsler in other diverse formations.  Due to working intensely with a variety of ethnic music styles, Drechlser’s music has become even more rhythmic and varied and intriguing. And let’s not forget Zuzee, the gifted artist of the turntables and member of the DJ syndicate "Waxolutionists", whose scratching abilities still seek to be matched.

Ulrich Drechsler - bass clarinet
Benny Omerzell or Tord Gustavsen (on request) - piano
Joerg Mikula - drums

latest release: "Humans & Places" (2006, Cracked Anegg)

"Touching gently, floating, slowly expanding this music finally seduces the listener with its memorizable melodies, the harmonious interplay and its unresistable calm."

With "Humans & Places" Ulrich Drechsler presents his own, very personal compositions.

"Humans & Places" is taking him back to his first and favorite instrument, the bass clarinet. Together with longtime compaignon drummer Jörg Mikula, furthermore pianist extraordinaire Tord Gustavsen from Norway, he put together a fantastic group. In Tord Gustavsen he found a partner who perfectly absorbs his ideas, processing them in his unmistakable, unique way. The piano player in the all austrian version of the trio is the exceptionally gifted Benny Omerzell.

Daily Mysteries Trio
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ulrich Drechsler - bass clarinet
Heimo Trixner - guitar
Jörg Mikula - drums

latest release: "Daily Mysteries" (2007, Cracked Anegg)

The compositions in “Daily Mysteries” tell the stories of the small personal phenomena which occur to us every day, which every one of us lives in a different way and which we cannot explain.

The musicians’ inspiration comes from a universe of landscapes and atmospheres filled with sound; sometimes elegant, sometimes sharp but constantly with a balance and peacefulness, which is unbroken note in the entire album.

Together they emerge out of a variety of constantly changing forms of expression and ideas, building a fine net, from which a warm, unique sound comes into light.

Similarly to the music of the quartet with Tord Gustavsen, the melodies and their gentle motion play a dominant role. The distance to the “proper” rhythm-group, the unique interpretation of the  bass clarinet, guitar und drums, as well as the absolute equilibrium of the instruments allow the musicians to move much more freely within the context. The music acquires an ascending atmospheric character.

Drechsler/Gülün/Mikula
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ulrich Drechsler - bass clarinet
Selen Gülün - piano/voice
Jörg Mikula - drums/frame drum

An exciting trio project with turkish piano player/singer Selen Gülün. The music is a mix of Selen's and my tunes which are quite different from each other. Selen has a fantastic technique and plays real expressive while my playing is more athmospheric and focused on the sound. And Jörg is the mediator between us.

film music
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Austrian director Michael Pfeifenberger has invited me to compose and produce music for his films. It's a complete new kind work for me, totally different from writing and performing in live contexts because you always have to take care that the music is not dominating the athmosphere but supports the pictures of the movie.

"Der Leinwandgeher" (2008) is a documentary about the famous carinthian writer Josef Winkler. For this movie a couple of songs of my Nu Jazz project Drechsler has been used.
--
"Todespolka" (2009) a real evil  political satire. Together with Heimo Trixner (git), Patrick Zambonin (b) and Jörg Mikula (dr), we recorded the music live in the studio while watching the movie. So the soundtrack feels real natural.

Music has the power to express anything that can’t be said in words.
It can reflect the full existence, the heart, soul and mind of any human being.
The more honest it should be.

(Ulrich Drechsler)

Ulrich Drechsler started playing the clarinet in the marching band of his hometown at the age of nine. In order to getting prepared for entering a classical conservatory he studied with a clarinet teacher of the operahouse in Stuttgart. At the age of sixteen he taught himself to the tenor saxophone, leading him to focus more on improvised music. Finally he decided to study jazz and moved to Austria. Between 1992 and 1998 he studied in Graz at the University of Arts.

Since 1999 Ulrich Drechsler is living in Vienna as a freelance composer and musician. He chose the bass clarinet as main instrument. The broad experiences made in his student years mirrors in his versatile projects.

Short after arriving in Vienna he founded the trio Café Drechsler with drummer Alex Deutsch and bassist Oliver Steger which caused international furore. Stilistic elements of various styles of music, like contemporary electronic music, melt into a completely improvised and acoustic context. For their third album the group received the austrian Amadeus Award in 2005.

In the quartet  Poesis  Ulrich Drechsler dedicates himself to classical music. 2001 the group released a completely new adaption of Franz Schubert's song cycle "Die Winterreise" for jazzquartet entiteled "Nebensonnen"

Ulrich Drechsler has a strong bond with the music of Thelonious Monk. He put together the group  The Monk In All Of Us  that committed itself fully to interpreting the musical oeuvre of this great genius of jazz history. With the exotic lineup bass-/contrabass clarinet, trumpet, double bass and drums the group travels on yet unknown paths through the compositions of the great pianist. Their debut album "the Monk in all of us" has been nominated for the prestigious Hans Koller Award in 2005.

The Ulrich Drechsler Quartet, founded in 2005, was his debut as a band leader. With this fantastic group, featuring longterm compagnions Oliver Steger, Jörg Mikula and the extraordinairy norwegian piano player Tord Gustavsen, Ulrich Drechsler presented his original compositions for the very first time. In Tord Gustavsen he found a partner who absorbs his ideas perfectly, processing them in his own unmistakeable unique way. The debut album "Humans & Places" got raving reviews both from audience and critics.

After six years of intense concert touring "Café Drechsler" was substituted by a new project: "Drechsler" is the name of the new quartet that is staffed - next to Ulrich Drechsler - with Oliver Steger and Jörg Mikula accompanied by the great Zuzee on the turntables. Although the sound is familiar - music for dancing, a blend of HipHop, drum'n'bass, Jazz, R&B, Bossa Nova etc. - due to the new cast a totally new, independent, contemporary sound emerged. The first album "Fortune Cookie" has been released in 2006.

In order to give his compositions new forms of expression, in 2007, together with guitarist Heimo Trixner and percussionist Jörg Mikula, he founded the "Daily Mysteries Trio" with the debut of the album "Daily Mysteries" in the same year. Similarly to the music of the quartet with Tord Gustavsen, the melodies and their gentle motion play a dominant role. The distance to the "proper" rhythm-group, the unique interpretation of the bass clarinet, guitar und drums, as well as the absolute equilibrium of the instruments allow the musicians to move much more freely within the context. The music acquires an ascending atmospheric character.

In 2009 Ulrich presented a new line-up of his Nu Jazz band "DRECHSLER" together with a new album entiteled "The Big Easy". With keyboarder Benny Omerzell from Austria and swiss bass player Patrick Zambonin together with the well-known drummer Jörg Mikula and DJ Zuzee the band sounds totally refreshed and renewed. Especially the keyboards give the music some complete new facets.

The same year Ulrich finished the work on his first movie soundtrack. Together with musicians from his different band projects he created nearly the complete music for the austrian movie "Todespolka", directed by Michael Pfeifenberger.

At the moment he is deeply involved in preparing a new exciting quartet project with bass clarinet, percussion and two celli. It will be presented with a new album and a tour in fall 2010.

Clarinets
-----------------------------------------------------
I play two different bass clarinets for different musical situations. First is a Buffet & Crampon model 1193 down to low C which I've bought in 1996. The sound of this instrument is more centered, focused and powerful, especially in the very low register. It's great for playing in louder contexts like straight ahead jazz or Nu Jazz. I also use it for the Thelonious Monk project which is a life-long journey. You can hear it on the "Monk In All Of Us" Album.

The second one is a Selmer Privilege also down to low C bought in 2005. This is my favorite instrument which I use for most performances and recordings. It has a beautiful warm sound, quite good intonation and is very easy to control, perfect for playing very soft which I do a lot. The great canadian clarinet technician Morrie Backun has modified the bell of the instrument. I can interchange now between my regular metal bell which is louder and Morrie Backun's wooden cocobolo bell which gives me more overtones and more warmth. Now the low C has much more resonance and sounds like a tone, not like noise and the balance over the whole range of the instruments works also better.

---

Saxophone
-----------------------------------------------------
Because meanwhile I play the saxophone very few I decided to give my old Selmer Mark VI away and bought a Cannonball Big Bell Stone Series tenor saxophone with an iced black nickle and iced silver plated finish. It has a bigger bore and bell which gives the instrument a very huge sound. Although it's a new saxophone it has a lot of soul and personality like the old instruments.

---

Mouthpieces
-----------------------------------------------------
I use a Morrie Backun mouthpiece on the bass clarinet, model "MoBa +". I've tried a lot of different brands and types over the years but Morrie's products are really outstanding. The sound is brilliant and clear, the high and very high register is warm, the middle register has a lot of resonance (that's always a problem on the bass clarinet) and the low register has a beautiful bottom, full of overtones. The control is perfect and it's really easy to combine the different registers and to play big intervals.

My tenor saxophon mouthpiece is a vintage wooden Pomarico (refaced). You see, I'm a big fan of wooden instruments, mouthpieces etc. It's really a beautiful one. I can play all kinds of music, from softest jazz ballads to drum'n'bass and HipHop.

---

Reeds & Ligatures
-----------------------------------------------------
Gonzalez reeds from Argentina: for nearly fifteen years I had the same reed brand in use until one of my students brought me a Gonzalez reed. I was totally knocked out, from the first moment I had a better control and clearer sound. Especially on an instrument like the bass clarinet you really need a good reed for mastering the whole range of the instrument. I can highly recommend them.

I'm a ligature maniac. I've tested within the last ten years nearly every new ligature for the bass clarinet. Then I've found a little manufacturer in Athens/Greece, George Paraschos and his two sons, who're specialiced in constructing wooden necks and bocals for saxophones and bassons. One of their products is a wooden! ligature which is absolutely unique. The difficult registers on the bass clarinet are the so-called clarion register (a'-g'') and the high and very high register ( c'''-d''''') where the sound is normally very thin and sharp. With the Paraschos ligature the sound has much more volume and warmth. I also use it on the saxophone with the same results.

---

Microphones
-----------------------------------------------------
This is always a difficult subject concerning the bass clarinet, especially in live situations. Over the years I've tested a lot of microphone setups with very different results. The best experiences I made by using two AKG C-414 B-XLS microphones. The sound is really natural so you feel really comfortable. When I'm on tour I always have them with me.

For the saxophon the non plus ultra microphone for me is the legendary ElectroVoice Re20.
